Scranton Slips Past Etown, 6-5

SCRANTON, Pa. --- Elizabethtown fell on the road to Middle Atlantic Conference rival Scranton in a 6-5 defensive struggle Saturday. Scranton, which scored the winning goal with just 1:35 remaining in regulation time, improves to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in the MAC, while Etown drops to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Scranton took a 2-0 lead into halftime, scoring both of its goals in the second quarter. Matt Newell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) scored Etown's first goal with 13:48 remaining in the third quarter off an assist from Bryan Miller (West Chester, PA/Henderson). By the end of the third quarter, Scranton held a 4-2 lead, with Etown's second goal coming courtesy of Justin McQuaid (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) with 6:52 remaining in the period.

Etown cut the lead to 4-3 on an Allen Churchman (Aston, PA/Garnet Valley) goal with 9:35 remaining in the fourth quarter. Justin Griffey (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) scored at 7:43 to tie the game at 4-4, and another Griffey goal at 6:34 put the Blue Jays ahead, 5-4. Scranton tied the game with a goal at 4:10 remaining, and Kyle Eaton drove home the winning score for Scranton with 1:35 left.

Chris Swierczek (Media, PA/Penncrest) made a game-high of 13 saves for Etown, as Scranton barely out-shot the Blue Jays, 31-30.

Etown will return to action at home Wednesday, April 2 against Swarthmore in a non-conference game at 2:00 p.m.
