Etown Opens 2004 Season with 14-12 Road Loss to Virginia Wesleyan

NORFOLK, Va. --- Elizabethtown opened its 2004 season with a long road trip to Virginia Wesleyan College, where the Blue Jays fell 14-12 in a late game Friday night.

Etown (0-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening three minutes and held a 7-5 advantage by halftime. Virginia Wesleyan (2-2) began to creep back into the game in the second half, cutting the Etown lead to 9-8 by the end of the third quarter. A pair of goals by Dan Hofmeister gave Virginia Wesleyan a 10-9 lead over Etown with ten minutes left in the game, but a Justin Griffey (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) goal, his third of the game, at 9:39 for Etown tied the score at 10-10. Virginia Wesleyan then rattled off four straight goals in the next six minutes to put the game away. Etown scored a pair of goals in the final two minutes, but it was not enough to close the gap.

Griffey and Matt Newell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) were Etown's leading scorers with three goals each, and Griffey also had an assist for four points. Justin McQuaid (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) added a pair of goals for the Blue Jays.

Three Etown first-years: Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven), Tim Sieger (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan) and Paul Wisneski (Cheyney, PA/Henderson) each tallied their first collegiate goal, and Puzzangara had an assist as well.

Matt Seiboth (Havertown, PA/Haverford) scored one goal and had two assists, and Allen Churchman (Aston, PA/Garnet Valley) had two assists as well for Etown. Griffey and Mike Dunn (Upper Darby, PA/Monsignor Bonner) each led Elizabethtown in ground balls with five.

Hofmeister led Virginia Wesleyan in scoring with four goals, and Ryan Bush led the team in assists with four. Ryan Naftzinger led Virginia Wesleyan in ground balls with seven.

Virginia Wesleyan out-shot Etown 40-22, and Virginia Wesleyan scooped up 50 ground balls against 32 for Etown.

Elizabethtown will return to action Wednesday, March 10 in its 2004 home opener against the College of Wooster (OH) in a 3:30 p.m. game.
