Etown Edges Wooster 7-6 in Overtime Behind Justin Griffey OT Goal for First Win of Season

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College logged its first win of the 2004 season in dramatic fashion at home Wednesday, downing the College of Wooster (OH) 7-6 in overtime. The Blue Jays improve to 1-1 with the win, while Wooster drops to 2-1 with its first loss of the season.

Wooster scored a pair of unanswered goals in the first quarter as Chris Vaccaro struck with a man up at 5:18 and Andy Boylan scored at 2:18. Etown scored its first goal with 8:43 left in the second quarter as Paul Wisneski (Cheyney, PA/Henderson) netted his second career goal off a feed from Justin McQuaid (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley). At 6:06, a Matt Seiboth (Havertown, PA/Haverford) man-up goal off an Allen Churchman (Aston, PA/Garnet Valley) assist tied the game 2-2. Etown took a 3-2 lead going into halftime after Matt Newell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) scored off a Tim Sieger (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan) assist with 3:29 left in the second quarter.

Wooster knotted the game at 3-3 with 5:59 left in the third quarter when Mike MacMaster scored off an Austin Taylor assist. Etown went up 4-3 1:05 later when Bryan Miller (West Chester, PA/Henderson) scored an unassisted goal. With just three seconds left in the third quarter, MacMaster scored again off another Taylor assist to tie the game 4-4.

Newell struck for Etown off another Churchman assist 56 seconds into the fourth quarter to give the Blue Jays a 5-4 lead, and Etown went up 6-4 just 3:03 into the fourth quarter when McQuaid scored off a Newell assist. Wooster climbed back into the game with 10:44 left in the fourth quarter when Taylor scored off a MacMaster assist to narrow the Etown lead to 6-5. With 8:06 left in the fourth quarter, Shawn Handy scored for Wooster off another MacMaster assist to tie the game at 6-6, which was where the score remained as regulation time expired.

Etown needed just 16 seconds in overtime to win the game, as Mike Dunn (Upper Darby, PA/Monsignor Bonner) won the opening face off and got the ball to Justin Griffey (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen), who ran downfield and fired off a long rifle shot that sailed past the Wooster goaltender and into the net.

Defenders Jason Wolensky (Rosemont, PA/Radnor) and Chris McCrea (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown) each led Etown in ground balls with six. Dunn scooped up five ground balls and won nine out of 16 faceoffs for the Blue Jays. Newell had team highs of two goals and three points, and Churchman led Etown in assists with two.
MacMaster led Wooster in goals with two and points with four, and he tied for the team lead in assists with Taylor with two each.

Elizabethtown will return to action at home Saturday, March 13 against Villa Julie College in a 1:00 p.m. game.
