ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE Etown Slips Past Lycoming, 9-8, Dethrones Warriors from First Place in MAC ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College improved to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference with a narrow 9-8 victory over Lycoming College at home Wednesday. Lycoming, which had been in possession of first place in the MAC entering the game, drops to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the MAC with the loss. Etown cruised out to a 4-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 7-3 with four minutes to go in the second quarter. A pair of goals by Lycoming's Dan Wilcox (Havertown, PA/Haverford) with 1:01 and 24 seconds remaining before halftime cut the Blue Jay lead to 7-5. Those two goals were also the start of a five goal run that ran the duration of the third quarter, as Lycoming tied the game 7-7 on another Wilcox goal with 4:14 left in the third quarter and took an 8-7 lead with 2:48 left in the third quarter on a Dave Kirschner (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) goal. That would be the last goal Lycoming would score, as Etown struck back with a man-up goal by Allen Churchman (Aston, PA/Garnet Valley) with 12:23 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 8-8. The final goal of the game was scored with 3:37 left on the clock when Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) scored on a Churchman assist for Etown to give the Blue Jays a 9-8 lead. For most of the final three minutes of the game, Elizabethtown held one of three man-up advantages and was able to mostly keep the ball in Lycoming's defensive zone. Etown goalie Brian Burke (Upper Darby, PA/Haverford) made 14 saves as Lycoming out-shot the Blue Jays 36-23 over the course of the game. He made six of those saves in the fourth quarter, when Lycoming out-shot Etown 11-6. Churchman and Justin Griffey (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) each led Etown in goals scored with two apiece. Churchman, Puzzangara, and Tim Sieger (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan) all had two assists each to lead the team. Puzzangara, Sieger, Dave Eshleman (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township), Bryan Miller (West Chester, PA/Henderson) and Matt Seiboth (Havertown, PA/Haverford) all scored single goals for Etown. Griffey, Burke and Chris McCrea (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown) all led Etown in ground balls with five each. Wilcox led Lycoming in goals with four, and Sang Duong (Havertown, PA/Haverford) led the Warriors in assists with three.
