ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE Nationally 9th-Ranked Washington & Lee Edges Etown, 7-6 in Overtime LEXINGTON, Va. --- Nationally ninth-ranked Washington & Lee University barely scraped past Elizabethtown College in a 7-6 overtime game in Lexington, Va. Wednesday. The Blue Jays, which have played nationally ranked opponents in all of their games so far this season, dropped to 0-3 with the loss, while Washington & Lee improved to 3-0 with the win. Matt Newell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) scored the game's opening goal for Etown with 11:33 left in the first quarter. Ned Rider tied the game with W&L's first goal at 9:49, and Newell gave Etown a 2-1 lead with a goal with 3:00 left in the first quarter. With 10:50 left in the second quarter, Mike Baracco tied the game with a W&L goal. Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) gave Etown a 3-2 lead going into halftime when he scored with 8:55 left. Etown went up 4-2 when Justin Griffey (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) scored at 6:18 left in the third quarter. By the end of the third quarter, however, Washington & Lee held its first lead of the game, 5-4, following three consecutive Gavin Molinelli goals at 5:48, 2:21 and 0:28. Puzzangara scored again for Etown 35 seconds into the fourth quarter to tie the game 5-5, and a Griffey goal with 2:17 left in the fourth quarter gave Etown a 6-5 lead. With 1:55 left in regulation time, Molinelli scored his fourth goal of the game for Washington & Lee to tie the score at 6-6 and send the game into overtime. Pat Collins scored the game-winner for Washington & Lee 3:59 into overtime off a Molinelli assist. Etown goaltender Fran McKeever (Springfield, PA/Springfield) made 11 saves in the Blue Jay net and netted nine ground balls around the goal as W&L out-shot Etown 30-22. Puzzangara, Griffey and Newell all scored two goals for Etown, and Allen Churchman (Aston, PA/Garnet Valley) had both of Etown's assists. Charlie McCombs led Washington & Lee in ground balls with nine, and Jack Murray led W&L in assists with two. Molinelli was the game's top goal scorer with four. Etown will return to action on the road Saturday, March 12 against Villa Julie College in a 12:00 p.m. game. Elizabethtown Coll.
