ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S LACROSSE Last Second Goal Puts Widener Past Etown 11-10 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown dropped a heartbreaking 11-10 Middle Atlantic Conference loss to Widener at home Saturday. Widener, which improved to 4-3 overall and 4-0 in the MAC with the win, scored the game-winning goal with 1.6 seconds left on the clock to cap a rally that began during the third quarter after the visiting Pioneers found themselves down 8-2. Etown dropped to 4-7 overall and 3-3 in the MAC with the loss. Etown vaulted out to a 2-0 lead just 1:04 into the game as Mike Dunn (Upper Darby, PA/Monsignor Bonner) scored 15 seconds into the game on the opening face-off and as Justin Griffey (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) netted a pass from Allen Churchman (Aston, PA/Garnet Valley) with 13:56 left in the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, Etown held a 3-1 lead thanks to a Bryan Miller (West Chester, PA/Henderson) goal off a Matt Newell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) assist with 5:09 left in the period. Etown out-scored Widener 3-1 again over the course of the second quarter to carry a 6-2 lead into halftime. Griffey, Churchman and Matt Seiboth (Havertown, PA/Haverford) all netted goals for Etown in the second quarter. Etown scored the first two goals of the third quarter as well, with Newell scoring off a Churchman assist with 9:10 left in the quarter and Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) scoring off a Seiboth assist just 15 seconds later. From then on, however, Widener out-scored Etown 9-2. By the end of the third quarter, Etown's lead stood at 8-6. Newell scored for the Blue Jays off a Churchman assist 20 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Etown a 9-6 lead, but Widener scored the next three goals to tie the game 9-9. Seiboth then scored on a Churchman assist with 5:36 left in the game, but Widener's Dennis Mann (Havertown, PA/Haverford), who had scored the previous game-tying goal with 5:56 left, scored again with 3:53 left to knot the score again at 10-10. With 1.6 seconds left on the clock, Mann struck for the third time in a row to give Widener the victory. Newell led Etown in goals scored with three, and Churchman scored one goal and tallied a game-high total of five assists. Seiboth finished the game with two goals and one assist, and Griffey scored two goals. Defender Chris McCrea (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown) led the game in ground balls with 10 for Etown, and Dunn scooped up eight ground balls in addition to scoring a goal. Etown first-year goalkeeper Chris Schuch (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) made 14 saves, including 12 in the second half alone, and had four ground balls. Mann and Todd Fairlie (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown) led Widener in goals scored with three each, and Fairlie had a team high of two assists. Gavin Goane (Springfield, PA/Springfield) scored twice for Widener, and Rob Hickey (Cohasset, MA/Cohasset) led the Pioneers in ground balls with six.
