MAC Rival Lycoming Edges Elizabethtown 13-12

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown fell at home Thursday in a 13-12 squeaker to Middle Atlantic Conference opponent Lycoming College. Lycoming improved to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the MAC with the win, while Elizabethtown dropped to 2-9 overall and 2-4 in the MAC.

Lycoming scored the game’s first goal, but by the end of the fourth quarter, Elizabethtown held a 6-2 lead. The Blue Jays’ lead stood at 9-6 at halftime, and by the end of the third quarter Lycoming had tied the score 9-9.

An Elizabethtown three-minute, non-releasable illegal stick penalty at the beginning of the fourth quarter helped set up an extra-man goal by Lycoming’s Jim Cusick (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) with 14:25 left in the game to give the Warriors a 10-9 lead. Etown struck back with a pair of short-handed goals by Andrew Wagner (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) at 13:15 and Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) at 13:03 to reclaim an 11-10 lead. From there, Lycoming scored three unanswered goals to take a 13-11 lead into the game’s final two minutes. Etown scored its last goal with 1:03 left in the game as Brad Whitcomb (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) scored off a Puzzangara assist.

Tom Welch (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) scored three goals to lead the Blue Jay offense, and Puzzangara and Wagner each added two goals. Puzzangara also had an assist, led Etown in ground balls with 11, and dominated the game’s face-offs by winning 20 out of 24. Scoring individual goals for Etown were Whitcomb, Chris Harrison (Newark, DE/Salesanium), Reid Allison (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield), Jeff Cowan (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) and Matt Seiboth (Havertown, PA/Haverford). Allison, Harrison, Frank Cacia (Newark, DE/Tatnall School) and Gary Senese (West Chester, PA/Henderson) each added one assist for Etown.

Tom Nairn (Fairport, NY/Fairport) led Lycoming in goals with four, and Justin Dixon (Baltimore, MD/North County) added three goals. Matt Lando (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post) added two goals and two assists for the Warriors, as did Cusick. Ryan Godec (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) scored two goals for Lycoming as well.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road April 19 against Susquehanna in a 4:00 p.m. MAC game.
