Elizabethtown Blasts MAC Rival DeSales, 17-5

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown defeated Middle Atlantic Conference rival DeSales University in a 17-5 home blowout Saturday. With the win, the Blue Jays remain in the hunt for one of the 11-team MAC’s six playoff spots by improving to 4-9 overall and 4-4 in the conference. DeSales dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-8 in the MAC with the loss.

DeSales scored the game’s first goal 14 seconds after the opening whistle, and the game was tied 2-2 with a minute left in the first quarter. Beginning with a Chris Harrison (Newark, DE/Salesianum) goal with 52 seconds left in the first quarter, Elizabethtown went on a 14-1 run through the middle of the fourth quarter. Etown scored twice in the first quarter’s final minute, outscored DeSales 5-1 in the second quarter, blanked DeSales 5-0 in the third quarter, and outscored the Bulldogs 3-2 in the fourth quarter.

Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) led Etown in goals with four, in shots with 24, and in ground balls with 12. He also assisted another goal and won 11 out of 19 face-offs. Puzzangara now has 37 goals in 2006, three away from the Elizabethtown single-season program record, and he now has 89 ground balls in 2006, two away from the Elizabethtown single-season record.

Andrew Wagner (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) and Matt Seiboth (Havertown, PA/Haverford) each scored two goals and had three assists for Etown. Tom Welch (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) scored three goals for the Blue Jays, and Jeff Cowan (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) scored twice. Harrison and Reid Allison (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) each scored one goal and had one assist. Mike Ruby (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) and Max Felty (Elizabethtown, PA/Lancaster Country Day) each scored one goal for Elizabethtown, and Felty’s goal came when the Blue Jays were playing short-handed.

Etown goaltender Chris Schuch (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) played the first 51:03 and made eight saves while allowing just three goals. He also had one assist, the first assist by a goaltender in the five-year history of the Elizabethtown men’s lacrosse program.

Dan Thomer (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) scored twice and had one assist for DeSales. Kevin Thomer (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) also scored two goals for the Bulldogs. Matthew Brancaccio (Greenvale, NY/North Shore) scored one goal, and Chris Laveglia (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) assisted one goal for DeSales.

Elizabethtown will return to action Wednesday, April 26 when the Blue Jays host the University of Scranton in a 4:00 p.m. MAC game.
