Elizabethtown Downs Saint Vincent 13-8

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College opened its 2007 season with a 13-8 home win over Saint Vincent College Saturday.

Saint Vincent scored the game’s first two goals, but by the end of the first quarter, Elizabethtown held a 5-2 lead. By halftime, Elizabethtown led 8-4, and the Blue Jay defense had held Saint Vincent to just six shots. Saint Vincent got 12 shots in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth, but Elizabethtown out-scored the visiting Bearcats 5-4 in the second half. For the game, Elizabethtown out-shot Saint Vincent 38-28 and held a 38-28 advantage in ground balls.

Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/William R. Boone) led Elizabethtown in scoring in his first game as a Blue Jay with three goals, and he had one assist and two ground balls. First-year student Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Twp.) led the Blue Jays in assists with four, and he scored two goals and had three ground balls. Fellow first-year Chris Senese (Leonardtown, MD/Unionville) also scored two goals and had three ground balls, and Brad Whitcomb (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) had two goals and one assist for Etown.

Senior Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) led Elizabethtown in ground balls with ten, and he scored two goals and was 11-for-14 in faceoffs. Defender Gary Senese (Leonardtown, MD/Tatnall School, DE) had six ground balls and one goal for Etown, and first-year Josh Dougherty (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep.) scored a goal. First-year John Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) had six ground balls for Elizabethtown and was 5-for-8 in faceoffs.

Evan Chateauneuf (Boxborough, MA/Acton Boxborough) led Saint Vincent in scoring with three goals and had four ground balls. Luke Swerdlow (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) led Saint Vincent in assists with four, and he scored two goals. Bart Costello (Lexington, MA/Lexington) also scored two goals, and Gavin Bates (Olney, MD/Georgetown Prep.) scored one goal for the Bearcats.

Elizabethtown will return to action in a 3:30 p.m. road game against nationally sixth-ranked Washington College (Md.) Wednesday, March 7.
