Elizabethtown Defeats Drew 12-8; Blue Jays off to Best Start in Program History

MADISON, N.J. --- Elizabethtown defeated Middle Atlantic Conference rival Drew University 12-8 on the road Saturday to improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the MAC. The Blue Jays are now off to their best start through five games in the six-year history of the program. Drew dropped to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the MAC with the loss.

The teams were tied 3-3 at the end of the first quarter, but Elizabethtown pulled out to an 8-4 lead by halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the Blue Jays held a 10-6 lead.

Elizabethtown out-shot Drew 38-25 and held a 40-28 edge in ground balls. Etown goaltender Chris Schuch (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) made 11 saves and scooped up five ground balls, and Drew goalie Michael Celentano made 12 saves and had four ground balls.

Aaron Weber (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) scored six of Elizabethtown’s 12 goals, and he assisted two more of them. Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) scored two more goals and had one assist, and Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) added two goals as well for Etown. Puzzangara also led Etown in ground balls with 12. Andrew Wagner (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) and Chris Senese (Leonardtown, MD/Unionville) each scored one goal, and Brad Whitcomb (Taneytown, MD/Francis Scott Key) led the Blue Jays in assists with three.

Gil Arbitsman led Drew in goals with four and in assists with two. Tom Stitt had a team-high total of six ground balls for the Rangers, and he scored one goal and had one assist.

Elizabethtown will return to action at home Wednesday, March 28 against King’s College (Pa.) in a 4:00 p.m. MAC game.
