Blue Jays Snap Skid With 13-5 Win over DeSales

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Junior Ryan McCafferty (Orlando, FL/Boone) scored four goals and added an assist as Elizabethtown College downed DeSales University 13-5 in Middle Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Jon Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) chipped in with three goals for the Blue Jays (3-7 overall, 1-2 MAC), who scored in the first minute of the second, third and fourth quarters to roll to the win over the Bulldogs (5-7 overall, 0-3 MAC) and snap a six-game losing streak.

Elizabethtown led 2-0 after one quarter and held a 3-2 lead late in the second quarter when McCafferty scored his second goal of the game with 1:56 left to push the Blue Jay lead to 4-2 at halftime.

The Blue Jays came roaring out of intermission, scoring four times in the first five minutes as McCafferty scored twice and sophomores Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and Josh Dougherty (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) added single goals to give the Blue Jays an 8-2 lead.

Staulters finished with two goals for Elizabethtown along with first-year student Kurt Deschner (Kelowna, BC/Kelowna Secondary), while first-year student Matt Miller (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) scored the final goal of the match with 3:40 remaining.

First-year student Greg Kenneally (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) dished out three assists on the afternoon for the Blue Jays, who finished with a 36-31 advantage in shots over the Bulldogs.

Dan Thomer led DeSales with three goals and an assist on the afternoon, while Whit Bruemmer and Matthew Brancaccio added single goals.

Defensively, sophomore Chris Day (Thornton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) led the Blue Jays with six ground balls, while Sam Gobeli paced the Bulldogs with six ground balls and won 12-of-20 faceoffs.

Elizabethtown went 1-for-3 with the man advantage and held DeSales to one goal in seven man-up opportunities. The Blue Jays also succeeded on 20 clears without a failure.

First-year student Hunter Malick (Center Valley, PA/Moravian Academy) made 12 saves to earn the victory for Elizabethtown, while Justin Campanelli finished with nine stops for DeSales.
