MADISON, N.J. --- Kevin Shevchenko scored 30 seconds into the first
overtime to give Drew a 2-1 victory over Elizabethtown in their Middle
Atlantic Conference semifinal match on Wednesday.
The loss prevents the Blue Jays (14-6) from reaching
the MAC championship game for the first time since 1992 and also jeopardizes
Etown's chances of earning a bid to the NCAA tournament. The 40-team
NCAA field will be announced on Sunday, November 8.
With their first victory over Etown since
1983 in the bag, the Rangers will host Messiah College in the MAC championship
match on Saturday, November 7. The Falcons stopped Scranton, 6-0,
in the MAC's other semifinal match.
With Etown trailing 1-0, Adam Dively
scored off an assist from Chris Helsel to knot the game at one and
force the extra periods.
Leading scorer Marvin Lopez had put
Drew on top with a goal at the 29:14 mark. Patrick O'Reilly
set up both Ranger goals.
Andy Napoli made ten saves to earn the
win for Drew (15-2-3). Doug Timm made six saves in the nets
for Etown, which lost an MAC semifinal match for the first time since
1985. The loss also insures that the Blue Jays will go two years
without a conference title for the |
