ETOWN DEFEATS F & M, 3-0, TO RETAIN POSSESSION OF SMITH-HERR "BRONZE BOOT"

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown opened its season with a 3-0 home victory over local rival Franklin and Marshall (1-1) Wednesday to retain possession of the Smith-Herr "Bronze Boot" Trophy.

Etown (1-0) scored its first goal at 5:49 into the game when Bryan Hoy (Beaver Springs, PA/West Snyder) scored off a penalty kick. Hoy scored again at 26:51, bouncing a shot off the goal post and into the net.

The Blue Jays final goal came at 73:30 when freshman J.T. Liss (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) scored the first goal of his collegiate career on assists from Hoy and Matthew Zimmerman (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West).

Etown and F & M play annually for the "Smith-Herr (Bronze) Boot" named for Robert Smith, who coached F&M from 1947-63 and Ira R. Herr, who coached Etown from 1938-48 and 1958-60 and was the school’s first Athletics Director.

Established in 1978, the trophy is "to memorialize the two men who did so much for soccer at their respective schools." The Bronze Boot is a soccer shoe originally worn by Al Hershey, who was a two-time All-American at Etown (1962, ‘63) and later coached at both Etown (for one season - 1968) and F&M.

Etown returns to action as host of the RE/MAX Cornerstone Blue Jay Classic Saturday, September 9 and Sunday September 10. Play begins at 11:00 a.m. with Allentown taking on William Paterson.

Elizabethtown will play Washington and Jefferson at 2:00 p.m. The third place game is scheduled for noon Sunday, and the tournament championship will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
