ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- William Paterson and Elizabethtown emerged as victors on the first day of the John Smith RE/MAX Cornerstone Blue Jay Classic men's soccer tournament Saturday. William Paterson defeated Allentown 3-1 and Elizabethtown won over Washington and Jefferson 4-0.
In the first game, William Paterson (2-1) and Allentown (1-2) fought to a 0-0 draw in the first half despite William Paterson's out-shooting of the Centaurs 20-2. Allentown goaltender Steve Simmons (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) made 20 saves for the Centaurs.
The celebration was short lived, as Bryan McGuire (Washington, PA/Archbishop Wood) scored for Allentown just 30 seconds later to even the score. A minute and a half later Jeff Adams (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) put William Patterson ahead for good. Jon Russo (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brothers) scored the final goal for William Patterson with 25:58 remaining to play in the game.
After almost 25 minutes of scoreless play to start the second game, Elizabethtown (2-0) exploded for four goals in six minutes against Washington and Jefferson (1-2-1). Bryan Hoy (Beaver Springs, PA/West Snyder) scored the first for Etown on an assist from Brent Conover (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg).
