ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown won the 2000 John Smith RE/MAX Cornerstone Blue Jay Classic in dramatic fashion Sunday, defeating William Paterson 2-1 in overtime. Earlier in the day, Allentown won against Washington and Jefferson 3-2 to take third place.
Elizabethtown (3-0) won in the 95th minute of an intense game that included 47 fouls, five yellow cards and three red cards. The winning goal was scored 4:55 into overtime by J.T. Liss (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) on an assist from Wyeth Raws (Malvern, PA/West Chester East). The assist was the 31st of Raws' career, moving him into a tie for tenth place in most career assists in Etown history with George Crampton, now the head coach of Allentown.
Etown and William Paterson (2-2) battled throughout the first half without scoring. The stalemate was broken by the Pioneers' Dowaine Green (Neptune, NJ/Ocean Township) on a penalty kick 68:52 into the game. Raws scored a goal for Etown at 74:51 on an assist from Dominic Marano (New Hope, PA/Solebury School), sending the game into overtime. William Paterson goalkeeper Frank Carniglia (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) made 13 saves for the Pioneers.
In the day's first game, Allentown jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead on goals by Trevor Stauffer (Allentown, PA/William Allen) and Bryan McGuire (Washington, PA/Archbishop Wood). Washington and Jefferson's Josh Jeffries (Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) made the score 2-1 with a goal 6:38 before halftime.
Allentown's Ryan Nolan (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) scored 5:23 into the second half, and Chris Bell (Eighty-Four, PA/Canon-McMillian) scored Washington and Jefferson's final goal with 5:36 remaining in the game when his corner kick arced into the goal unassisted.
Following the tournament, Elizabethtown's Bryan Hoy (Beaver Springs, PA/West Snyder) was named the Offensive MVP of the tournament, and William Patterson's Jeff Adams (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) was named the tournament's Defensive MVP.
Etown returns to action on the road against Drew at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 13.
