F&M Boots Etown, 2-1
LANCASTER, Pa. --- Despite outshooting host Franklin and Marshall 20-11, Elizabethtown lost possession of the Smith-Herr Bronze Boot for the first time since 1988 with a 2-1 loss to the Diplomats Wednesday. It was also the first F&M had beaten Etown since 1986.
Franklin and Marshall took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Scott Runyon with 33:33 remaining in the first half. The Diplomats went ahead 2-0 when Pete Pryzhylkowski scored with 26:27 remaining to play
Etown got its only goal with just three seconds left in the game. David O'Herlihy (Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, Ireland) scored on a penalty kick for the Blue Jays.
In addition to outshooting F&M, the Blue Jays had four corner kicks against none for the Diplomats. F&M goaltender Chris Milano made sixteen saves.
Elizabethtown and F&M play every year for possession of the Smith-Herr Bronze Boot. The trophy is named for Robert Smith, who coached F&M from 1947-63 and Ira R. Herr, who coached Etown from 1938-48 and 1958-60 and was the school’s first Athletics Director. Established in 1978, the trophy is “to memorialize the two men who did so much for soccer at their respective schools.”
The Bronze Boot is a bronzed soccer shoe originally worn by Al Hershey, who was a two-time All-American at Etown (1962, ‘63) and later coached at both Etown (for one season - 1968) and F&M.
