Etown Gets First Win of Season, 3-0, Over Skidmore
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Never in the history of Elizabethtown's men's soccer program, stretching back to 1938, has a Blue Jay team begun a season 0-4. It did not happen in 2001, either, as Elizabethtown defeated Skidmore (NY), 3-0, to improve to 1-3 overall and finish second in the John Smith RE/MAX Cornerstone Blue Jay Classic tournament.
After scoring only two goals, one of which came on a direct kick, in the first 337 minutes of the season, Elizabethtown's offense awoke from its slumber 14 minutes into the second half with a goal on a breakaway by Drew Leisenring (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff).
The Blue Jays pounded home two more goals in the next 16 minutes, as Kyle Cooper (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) scored on an assist from Ryan Wattenschaidt (Jarretsville, MD/North Harford) with 24:09 left in the game, and Wattenschaidt struck with a goal of his own with 15:25 remaining.
Etown first-year goaltender Edwin Tichenor (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) made three saves for the first shutout of his collegiate career.
The Blue Jays return to action at home Wednesday, September 12 against Drew. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
