ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER
Etown Falls to Second Ranked Messiah, 2-1, in Final Regular Season Game
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown finished the regular season 12-6-1 overall and 6-1 in the Commonwealth Conference after falling to Messiah, currently ranked second in the country and the defending national champion, 2-1, in front of a crowd numbering in the thousands at home Saturday. Messiah, which improves to 16-1 overall and 7-0 in the conference with the win, won by just one goal for only the third time this season.
The Blue Jays struck first at 16:57 when Daniel Harris (West Chester, PA/Downingtown) scored on an assist from Charlie Haines (Hamilton, NJ/Hun School of Princeton). Messiah tied the game at 29:10 when Matt Bills scored. Bills also scored the game-winner for the Falcons at 64:24.
Elizabethtown was outshot 12-8 by Messiah, and Etown goaltender Edwin Tichenor (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) made seven saves. Chris Boyles had four saves in the net for Messiah.
With the win, Messiah retains possession of the Marshmallow Trophy for the third straight season.
Elizabethtown will return to action as host of a first-round Commonwealth Conference playoff game against Moravian Wednesday, time to be determined.
