ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER
Etown Regains Bronze Boot With 3-1 Win Over Franklin and Marshall
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- It wasn't pretty, but in the end, Elizabethtown (3-0-2) regained possession of the coveted Smith-Herr Bronze Boot with a 3-1 win over Franklin and Marshall (1-5) in a rough game at Herr Field Saturday night that featured 14 cards.
Elizabethtown got its first goal of the game just 1:52 after the start, when, in a fitting prelude to the rest of the game, Charlie Haines (Hamilton, NJ/Hun School of Princeton) was fouled in the box by an F&M defender and Chase Franklin (Phoenix, MD/Loyola Blakefield) scored on the subsequent penalty kick. Etown jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Steve Custer (Baltimore, MD/Dundalk) scored an open-net goal on a pass from Franklin at 26:34.
At 35:08, a Franklin and Marshall player was fouled in the box by an Elizabethtown defender, setting up a penalty kick by Dave Nelson (Ambler, PA/Wissahickon).
However, before the kick could take place, Etown starting goaltender Michael Ciattei (Jarrettsville, MD/St. Paul's School-Baltimore) was red carded and Edwin Tichenor (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) took over in his place while another Etown player left the field. Nelson got the ball past Tichenor for F&M's only goal of the night.
Elizabethtown played a man down against F&M for the rest of the first half and for the first 18:53 of the second half, when the Diplomats' Steve Azarik (Hatfield, PA/Germantown Academy) received his second card of the game, an automatic red card.
With each team having ten players to a side, Etown scored an insurance goal at 73:07 when a shot by James DiPino (Baldwin, MD /Loyola) deflected off the goal post and into the net. Timothy Filewicz (Wenonah, NJ/Deptford) assisted the goal.
In the end, Etown outshot F&M 23-9 and Tichenor made seven saves in the Blue Jays' net to preserve the win, giving back possession of the Bronze Boot to Etown after Franklin and Marshall wrenched it away with a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays in 2001. It was the first time F&M held the Boot since a tie game in 1988, and the first time the Diplomats had beaten the Blue Jays since 1986.
The Bronze Boot is actually a bronzed soccer shoe worn by Al Hershey, an All-American at Elizabethtown and former head coach of both Elizabethtown and F&M.
Etown returns to action on the road Wednesday, September 18 against Drew for a 7:00 p.m. game.
