Etown Claims Marshmallow Trophy with 1-0 Win over Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. --- The long wait for Etown soccer fans is over. Elizabethtown defeated Messiah, 1-0, in front of a rabid crowd numbering in the thousands at Messiah's Starry Field Saturday night.

It was Elizabethtown's first win over Messiah since 1996. To put things in perspective, freshman Andrew Kummerer (Glenmoore, PA/Coatesville), who scored the Blue Jays' golden goal Saturday night, was in eighth grade the last time Etown beat the Falcons.

The win also meant that Etown reclaimed the Marshmallow Trophy, awarded to the winner of the annual regular-season Etown-Messiah game, for the first time from Messiah. The trophy was made in Elizabethtown in 1999, but was promptly wrenched away from the Blue Jays' grasp that year by the Falcons.

Kummerer's winning goal came at 84:11 off a pass from Brad Confer (Lancaster, PA/Maheim Township), who dribbled around the perimeter of the box toward the goal line while dodging several Messiah defenders, before hitting up Kummerer.

Elizabethtown's efforts were aided by an inspired performance by goaltender Michael Ciattei (Jarrettsville, MD/St. Paul's School-Baltimore), who made eight saves to keep Etown in the game despite being out-shot by Messiah 18-7.

With the win, Elizabethtown concludes the 2002 regular season with a 14-2-3 overall and 6-0-1 Commonwealth Conference record. Etown will return to action at home Wednesday, November 6, when it hosts a first round conference playoff game, time and opponent to be determined.
