Messiah Seizes Marshmallow Trophy, #1 Seed in Conference Playoffs with 2-1 Upset of 4th-Ranked Elizabethtown
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Messiah upset nationally fourth-ranked Elizabethtown, 2-1, at Etown Saturday to seize possession of the Marshmallow Trophy from the Blue Jays, as well as claim the number one seed in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, which will begin Wednesday. Etown drops to 15-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the conference with the loss, and the Blue Jays will settle for the number two seed in the conference playoffs. Messiah, which is ranked fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Region and is currently unranked nationally despite being the defending NCAA Division III champion, improves to 15-2-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the conference with the win.
Messiah wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Sam Casey (Fairfax, VA/Paul VI) scored on an assist from Aaron Casper (Somerset, NJ/Timothy Christian) just 3:04 into the game. Etown tied the game at 30:15 when Steve Custer (Baltimore, MD/Dundalk) scored on an assist by Brian Albrecht (Baltimore, MD/Patapsco).
The score remained knotted at 1-1 through the remainder of the first half and until just 7:03 left in the game, when an Etown foul at the top of the box set up an indirect kick for Messiah. The resulting shot by Seth Lehman (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) caromed off the right Etown goalpost and went straight to Falcon first-year midfielder Andre Burkhart (Telford, PA/Souderton), who buried the ball in the Etown net for the first goal of his collegiate career and the game-winner.
Elizabethtown will return to action when it hosts the first round of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs Wednesday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. against Moravian.
