Elizabethtown and Lebanon Valley Play to 0-0 Draw in Conference Opener
ANNVILLE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown battled Lebanon Valley to a 0-0 tie on the road in the 2004 Commonwealth Conference opener for both teams. The Blue Jays, which out-shot Lebanon Valley 23-13 over the course of the game, now have a 3-1-3 overall an 0-0-1 conference record. Lebanon Valley's record is now 5-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the conference. The game was Etown's fifth shutout and second 0-0 tie in just seven games thus far this season.
Etown goaltender Edwin Tichenor (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) made six saves, and Lebanon Valley keeper John Mentzer (Myerstown, PA/ELCO) made eight saves to preserve the shutout for both teams.
Lebanon Valley played the last 13:49 of the game down a man after Justin Klunk (Hanover, PA/South Western) drew his second yellow card of the game 6:11 into the first ten-minute overtime. Still, the Blue Jays could not score despite firing off four shots in the first overtime and five more shots in the second overtime. Lebanon Valley, by contrast, did not have any shots following the end of regulation time. Mentzer made five of his eight saves for LVC after the game's 90th minute.
Etown first-year Brian Raveling (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) led all players in the game in shots taken with seven.
Elizabethtown will play host to Arcadia University Saturday, September 25 in a 7:00 p.m. showdown between regionally ranked powers. Arcadia is currently ranked third in the Mid-Atlantic Region of NCAA Division III, while Etown is ranked in a tie for fifth in the region.
