Ninth-Ranked Messiah Downs 25th-Ranked Etown 3-1
GRANTHAM, Pa. --- Nationally ninth-ranked Messiah defeated nationally 25th-ranked Elizabethtown 3-1 Saturday night in the teams' annual Marshmallow Trophy game, held this year at Messiah. It was the final regular season game of the year for both teams, and it sent Messiah's record to 17-0-1 overall and 7-0 in the Commonwealth Conference and Etown's record to 12-3-3- overall and 5-1-1 in the conference. Messiah clinched the number one seed in the conference playoffs next week, while Etown secured the number two seed.
Etown's Brian Healy (Newark, DE/A.I. DuPont) got the Blue Jays on the scoreboard first, netting an unassisted goal just 37 seconds into the game. Kai Kasiguran scored for Messiah 2:11 into the game to tie it at 1-1, which is where the score remained at halftime.
Messiah went up 2-1 6:06 into the second half when Bill Crompton scored. The Falcons got an insurance goal at 56:13 when Dan Wagner scored.
Messiah held a 17-10 advantage in shots, and the Falcons had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
Possibly the most intense rivalry in NCAA Division III soccer, Elizabethtown and Messiah play their final conference game each season for possession of the Marshmallow Trophy, which was instituted in 1999. The game is annually one of the highest attended Division III soccer games in the country.
Elizabethtown will return to action in the first round of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs Tuesday, November 2. The Blue Jays will host third-seeded Lebanon Valley at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
