Johns Hopkins Advances to Sectionals of NCAA Tournament on Penalty Kicks after Tying Elizabethtown 1-1
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Johns Hopkins University, the second-ranked team in NCAA Division III, advanced to the sectionals of the NCAA Division III tournament on penalty kicks Saturday after tying second-round host Elizabethtown College 1-1 through two overtime periods. Hopkins converted all five of its penalty kick opportunities, while Elizabethtown made three out of four chances. Elizabethtown concludes the season with a 15-3-4 overall record, while Hopkins' record now stands at 17-0-2.
After a scoreless first half, Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead at 63:42 when Brian Healy (Newark, DE/A.I. DuPont) scored off an Andrew Kummerer (Glenmoore, PA/Coatesville) assist. It was just the fourth goal allowed all year by Hopkins goalie Gary Kane, Jr. (Lansdale, PA/La Salle) and only the fifth goal surrendered by Johns Hopkins all season.
Johns Hopkins had several solid scoring opportunities, but two of the best Hopkins shots which got past Etown goalie Edwin Tichenor (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) were blocked just before going in the goal on spectacular defensive saves by Brennan Reichenbach (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) and Michael Terry (Beech Creek, PA/Central Mountain). Etown also missed a scoring opportunity with eight minutes left in the first half when it briefly appeared that Bryan Noll (Fleetwood, PA/Oley Valley) had scored a goal, but it did not count because the cross pass that set it up had arced out of bounds before sailing back in bounds.
The final minutes in regulation time wound down and saw Etown clinging to its 1-0 lead. However, just 1:15 before the game would have ended, Johns Hopkins tied the game on a Manbaj Gill (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) goal assisted by Stephen Walsh (Cork, Ireland/Colaiste An Spioraid Naoimh), thereby sending the game into overtime.
After two scoreless ten minute overtimes, the game went to penalty kicks. Hopkins converted all five of its penalty kick opportunities, while Etown converted three of its four opportunities. Moath Hamzeh (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) struck the decisive final kick for Johns Hopkins.
Shot totals for the game were even, with both Etown and Hopkins firing off 11 shots. Johns Hopkins had six corner kicks against three for Etown. Tichenor finished the game with three saves for Etown, while Kane had five saves for Johns Hopkins.
