Elizabethtown Wins Blue Jay Classic with 2-0 Victory over Montclair State; Mary Washington Takes Consolation Game; Brian Healy Named Tournament MVP

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown captured the championship of its 2005 Blue Jay Classic Tournament Sunday with a 2-0 win over Montclair State. The Blue Jays improved to 2-1-1 overall with the win while Montclair State suffered its first loss of the season and is now 3-1. In the consolation game, Mary Washington picked up its first win of the season in a 3-2 victory over Wesley ( Del.)

After a scoreless first half in the Etown-MSU game, the Blue Jays got on the scoreboard 58:54 into the game when Brian Raveling (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) scored off a Rick Winstanley (Manchester, UK/St. Gabriel’s) assist. Etown scored again with 12:01 left in the game when Brian Healy (Newark, DE/A.I. DuPont) was fouled in the box. He took the resulting penalty kick and scored on it.

Montclair State out-shot Elizabethtown 15-12 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Etown goalie A.J. Fleisher (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) made five saves in the shutout effort, while MSU goalie Chris Owen (Pompton Lakes, NJ/ Pompton Lakes) made four saves.

In the consolation game, Mary Washington jumped out to what seemed like a safe 3-0 lead in the game’s 47 th minute after scoring two goals in the first half. However, Wesley scored at 60:22 and again at 84:17. Mary Washington, which out-shot Wesley 11-6 in the first half and got out-shot 14-4 in the second half, held on for the final 5:43 to win.

Etown’s Healy was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. In addition to scoring the second goal of the championship game, he also took the winning shot in the Blue Jays’ 2-1 overtime opening-round win over Wesley Saturday night.
