Etown Defeats Susquehanna 3-2 in Blue Jays’ Conference Opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown shook off some early scares from visiting Susquehanna University to win its Commonwealth Conference opener 3-2 at home Wednesday night. The Blue Jays improved to 4-2-1 overall with the win, while Susquehanna dropped to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference with the loss.

The game’s first three goals were scored within 1:12 of each other. Susquehanna scored first 10:23 into the game when Justin Makar (Weirton, WV/ Sewickley Academy) found the back of the net. An Etown goal by Brian Raveling (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) off and Andrew Kummerer (Glenmoore, PA/Coatesville) assist at 10:47 tied the game 1-1. Susquehanna struck back at 11:35 as a Nate Snyder (Catawissa, PA/Southern Columbia) goal gave the Crusaders a 2-1 lead.

Etown tied the score at 2-2 when Brian Healy (Newark, DE/A.I. DuPont) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season off a Wes Bunting (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) assist 23:04 into the first half, and the score remained tied at 2-2 until Etown sophomore Mike Helsel (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) scored off a Rick Winstanley (Manchester, England/St. Gabriel’s) assist with just 8:32 left to play in regulation time.

Despite the close score, Etown out-shot Susquehanna 21-9 over the course of the game. Susquehanna held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Etown goalie A.J. Fleisher (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) made six saves, and Susquehanna keeper Nick Hoover (Morrisville, PA/Notre Dame, NJ) made eight saves.

Etown will return to action at home Saturday, September 24 in a non-conference game against Lycoming College at 7:00 p.m.
