ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER
Elizabethtown Rallies to Reclaim Smith-Herr Bronze Boot from F&M in 2-1 Win
ELIZABETHTOWN , Pa. --- Elizabethtown College won its 2006 home opener in dramatic fashion Wednesday night, shaking off a rusty first half to take a come-from-behind 2-1 win from visiting Franklin & Marshall College and reclaim the Smith-Herr Bronze Boot trophy. Elizabethtown improves to 2-0-1 with the win, while Franklin & Marshall drops to 0-1 with the loss.
Franklin & Marshall out-shot Elizabethtown 12-3 in the first half and scored 11:20 into the game when an cross pass by Brandon Corday (Morton Grove, IL/Niles Township) scooted past its intended recipient and the entire Elizabethtown defense and into the net. F&M also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks in the first half. F&M came close to scoring again late in the first half, when a barrage of three shots in five seconds by Jose Cabella and Eric Corsini were all saved by Etown goalie A.J. Fleisher (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown Area).
The tables were turned in the second half, as Elizabethtown out-shot F&M 8-5 and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Blue Jays tied the game at 66:16 when Wes Bunting (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) drove home a ball received from a corner kick by Bryan Holt (Hershey, PA/Lower Dauphin). Elizabethtown scored the game-winner at 70:54, when Matt Diller (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) headed in a cross pass by Dan Flaherty (West Chester, PA/Henderson). The goal was Diller’s team-leading third of the season, and his first game-winner of 2006.
Fleisher finished the game with eight saves in the Etown net, six of which came in the first half. F&M goalie Ed Stelz (Washingtonville, NY/Loomis Chaffee) made six saves, five of which came in the second half.
The Bronze Boot is a soccer shoe originally worn by Al Hershey ’64, who was a two-time All-American at Elizabethtown (1962 and 1963), and he later coached at both Elizabethtown and Franklin & Marshall. The Boot is named for Robert Smith, who coached F&M from 1947 to 1963, and for Ira R. Herr, who coached Etown from 1938 to 1948 and from 1958 to 1960. Established in 1978, the purpose of the trophy is “to memorialize the two men who did so much for soccer at their respective schools.”
Elizabethtown and Franklin & Marshall are the two NCAA Division III member colleges in Lancaster County, Pa. Franklin & Marshall claimed the Bronze Boot last year in a 1-1 tie at F&M. Since the Smith-Herr Bronze Boot was created in 1978, Elizabethtown has led the series 22-4-3. All-time, Elizabethtown leads the series between the teams 25-6-3. Ironically, Smith and Herr never coached against one another in soccer.
