Elizabethtown Defeats Gettysburg 3-1; Blue Jay Head Coach Skip Roderick Three Wins Away from 400 for Career
ELIZABETHTOWN , Pa. --- Elizabethtown improved to 7-3-2 overall with a 3-1 non-conference home win over Gettysburg College (8-4) Wednesday night. The win was the 397th of Elizabethtown head coach Skip Roderick’s career, putting him three wins away from becoming just the ninth NCAA Division III men’s soccer coach to amass 400 career victories. All three of the Blue Jays’ goals in the game were the first of the season for their respective scorers.
Gettysburg took a 1-0 lead early in the game when Jesse Gemberling-Johnson (Wyndmoor, PA/Christopher Dock) scored off a Mike Tirney (Springfield, PA/Springfield) assist at 13:36. The Blue Jays tied the game at 27:30, when sophomore Bryan Holt (Hershey, PA/Lower Dauphin) scored unassisted for his first goal of 2006 and the second of his collegiate career. The score remained 1-1 at halftime.
Elizabethtown went ahead to stay at 64:40 when junior Steve Petrosky (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) scored his first goal of the season off assists by Mike Helsel (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra Area) and Rick Winstanley (Manchester, England/St. Gabriel’s). Elizabethtown extended its lead to 3-1 at 78:21 when first-year student Kevin Christie (Camp Hill, PA/ Cumberland Valley) scored the first goal of his collegiate career of an assist from first year student Jeff Warusz (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy). It was the first assist of his career as well.
Etown out-shot Gettysburg 13-7, including a 6-1 advantage in shots in the second half. The Blue Jays also held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Saturday, October 14 against Widener University in a 7:00 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game.
