LANCASTER, Pa. --- Brandon Corday scored 4:22 into overtime to give ninth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College a 1-0 victory over Elizabethtown College in the annual Smith-Herr Bronze Boot men's soccer match on Tuesday night.

In a match delayed nearly two hours due to rain and lightning, Corday scored his ninth goal of the season on a direct kick to give the Diplomats (13-0-0 overall) just their fifth win over the Blue Jays (10-3-0 overall) in 30 Bronze Boot matches since 1978.

The Diplomats finished with a 12-2 edge in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks over the Blue Jays in the contest.

Junior Jeff Mullen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) finished with two saves in goal for Elizabethtown, while Zack Zamek did not make any saves for Franklin & Marshall.

The Bronze Boot is a soccer shoe originally worn by Al Hershey ’64, who was a two-time All-American at Elizabethtown (1962 and 1963), and he later coached at both Elizabethtown and Franklin & Marshall. The Boot is named for Robert Smith, who coached F&M from 1947 to 1963, and for Ira R. Herr, who coached Etown from 1938 to 1948 and from 1958 to 1960. Established in 1978, the purpose of the trophy is “to memorialize the two men who did so much for soccer at their respective schools.”

Elizabethtown and Franklin & Marshall are the two NCAA Division III member colleges in Lancaster County, Pa. Elizabethtown regained possession of the boot last season with a 2-1 win over Franklin & Marshall. Since the Smith-Herr Bronze Boot was created in 1978, Elizabethtown has led the series 22-5-3. All-time, Elizabethtown leads the series between the teams 25-7-3. Ironically, Smith and Herr never coached against one another in soccer.
