ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S TENNIS Elizabethtown Men’s Tennis Edges Moravian 5-4 in Conference Opener and Division I La Salle 5-4 to Run Winning Streak to Four Matches; Elizabethtown Women’s Tennis Defeats Division I La Salle 5-4 ELIZABETHTOWN and LANCASTER, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College’s tennis teams won all three matches in which they played this weekend. The Elizabethtown men defeated NCAA Division I member La Salle University 5-4 Saturday and Commonwealth Conference rival Moravian College 5-4 Sunday to stretch their winning streak to four matches and improve to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Elizabethtown women, playing in their first match since October, defeated D-I La Salle University 5-4 as well Saturday to improve to 14-2 overall in 2006-07. Saturday’s men’s and women’s matches against La Salle began at Elizabethtown’s Alumni Courts, but as rain began to fall, they had to be moved indoors to the Hempfield Sports Complex in Lancaster, Pa. The La Salle men dropped to 6-8 overall with the loss, while the La Salle women fell to 4-6 overall with the loss. In the men’s match Saturday, Elizabethtown began in the hole 2-1 after winning only one of the three doubles matches. The tandem of Maarten Albers (Oisterwijk, The Netherlands/Theresialyceum) and Andrew Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) won 8-3 at first doubles for Etown. The Blue Jays rallied to win the match by taking four of the six singles contests. Albers won 8-5 at one, Voshell won 8-4 at four, Bastiaan Dessing (The Hague, The Netherlands/Sorghvbil Gymnasium) won 8-6 at five, and Zach Atkinson (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) won 8-0 at six singles. In Saturday’s women’s match, the Blue Jays took two of the three doubles contests. Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) and Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) eked out a 9-8 (8-6) win at first doubles, while Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) and Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) cruised to an 8-2 win at third doubles. In the singles sets, Shapiro ground out a 9-7 win at one. Lander won a 6-0, 6-0 blowout at fifth singles, and Russell posted an 8-1 win at six. Facing Moravian in their Commonwealth Conference opener Sunday, the Elizabethtown men scraped out a 5-4 win, and Moravian dropped to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference with the loss. In doubles, Ryan Knarr (Robesonia, PA/Conrad Weiser) and Brok Walker (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) won 8-4 for Etown at second doubles, and Atkinson and James Dombach (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) won 8-5 at third doubles. In singles, Albers won 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 at one, Walker won 6-4, 6-2 at three, and Dessing won 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 at five. The Elizabethtown men will return to action on the road Tuesday, March 27 at Commonwealth Conference opponent Messiah College in a 3:30 p.m. match. The Elizabethtown women will return to action at home Saturday, March 31 in a 10:00 a.m. match against Washington College (Md.). At Elizabethtown, Pa.
