TOP FOUR SEEDS MAKE SEMIFINALS IN SINGLES, TOP TWO, FIFTH AND SIXTH SEEDS REACH SEMIS IN DOUBLES AT 2000 MAC INDIVIDUAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- There were few surprises in the singles matches on the first day of the 2000 Middle Atlantic Conference men's tennis individual championships hosted by Elizabethtown College, as the top four seeds were the four competitors to reach the semifinal round at the end of the day. The doubles tournament witnessed a few upsets on the first day of competition Friday as the third and fourth seeds failed to reach the semifinals.

In singles play, top seed Vlad Handl (Watkins Glen, NY) of Scranton, number two seed John Fotopoulos (Reading, PA) of Albright, third seeded Chris Hileman (Sinking Spring, PA) from Lebanon Valley and number four seed David Kurvink (Bethlehem, PA) of Moravian were the four players who remained after the first day of competition.

Although the end result was not unexpected, the day had its share of surprises. Sixth seeded Scott Moerschbacher (Montoursville, PA) of Lycoming fell in the second round to unseeded Anthony Scala of King's, 7-6 (10-8), 6-1. Elizabethtown's unseeded Bill Miller (Ridley, PA) gave number one Handl a scare in the second round. Handl's victory came with a score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, was the only three set match of the second
round and one of only two three set matches in singles play for the day. Kurvink's trip to the semifinal round proved difficult, as he had to outlast Lebanon Valley's seventh seeded Mic Bender (Elizabethtown, PA), 7-5, 6-4.

In doubles play, fifth seeded Tom Crofton (Scranton, PA) and Paul Gerrity (Scranton, PA) of King's defeated Scranton's fourth seeded Bill Hughes (Waverly, PA) and Jeff Rucinski (Wyndmoor, PA), 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 to reach the semifinals.

Elizabethtown's number two seeded pair of Scott Czerwonka (Saylorsburg, PA) and Tom Height (Nescopeck, PA) also reached the semifinal round, but first had to outlast Messiah's unseeded Jared Fly (Sellersville, PA) and Matt Appleton (West Springfield, MA) in a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) second round marathon in order to even make the quarterfinals.

First seeded Trey Alter (Baltimore, MD) and Anthony Carreras (Staten Island, NY) of Drew and sixth seeded Ryan Arnold (Lebanon, PA) and Brock Hoover (Myerstown, PA) from Lebanon Valley also reached the semifinal round by the end of the day.

The biggest upset of the doubles tournament's first day came in the second round when unseeded Danny Neumann (High Point, NC) and Jeremy Johnson (Bourbonnais, IL) defeated Wilkes' third seeded Jason Brady (Conshohocken, PA) and Joe Scordino (Apalachin, NY), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

The 2000 MAC men's tennis individual championships will conclude Saturday, April 29 at Elizabethtown College. The semifinal rounds of singles and doubles will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the finals to follow.
