Elizabethtown College Men's Tennis Etown Defeats Lycoming, 4-3, in Season's Final Match; Blue Jays Finish with Winning Record for Fifth Straight Year ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- With a close 4-3 win over Lycoming Thursday, Elizabethtown concluded its 2002 season with a 10-9 overall record, the fifth consecutive season the Blue Jays have posted a winning mark. What made the feat truly amazing, though, is the fact that the Blue Jays reached this point by going 10-2 in their last 12 matches after beginning the season 0-7. The question of whether or not Etown would conclude 2002 with a winning record came down to the finish of the very last match, a three set marathon at number four singles won by freshman Chris Mardekian (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Etown began the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to win the doubles point. The other two singles match victories that put Etown over the top came at number one courtesy of Bill Miller (Ridley Park, PA/Sun Valley), 6-3, 6-4, and a number six singles win by Matt Lawless (Windber, PA/Windber), 6-4, 7-6 (5). Although the Blue Jays season as a team is done, selected members of the squad will compete in the 2002 MAC individual tennis championships, to be hosted by King's College and Wilkes University Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27. at Elizabethtown, Pa.
