Elizabethtown College Men's Tennis Etown Opens 2005 Season With 8-1 Win over Penn State-Behrend in Hilton Head HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- Elizabethtown College's men's tennis team opened its 2005 season with an 8-1 win over Penn State-Behrend Monday during its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. The Blue Jays swept the doubles matches and won five out of the six singles matches. Penn State-Behrend drops to 3-4 overall with the loss, while Etown is now 1-0. Thomas Nyst (Apeldoorn, The Netherlands/Walter Bosch) won his collegiate singles debut for the Blue Jays in commanding fashion at number two, yielding only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. At number one doubles, Nyst and senior Greg Voshell (Chester Heights, PA/Garnet Valley) teamed up to win 8-3, giving Voshell the 32nd doubles win of his career and moving him into a tie for fourth place in career doubles wins in Etown's modern records and moving him within three wins of the modern career mark of 35 doubles wins held by Joe Kramer '83. Voshell also won his number one singles match 6-4, 6-4. At number three singles, Yero Saponjian (Yerevan, Armenia/Oshavan) won his collegiate singles debut 6-0, 6-2, and he along with senior Josh Miller (Indiana, PA/Indiana) scraped out a 9-7 win at number two doubles. Miller posted a 6-2, 7-5 win at number four singles for Etown as well. Pepijn Dekker (The Hague, The Netherlands/VCL) won his collegiate singles debut 6-3, 6-2 at number five, and he and senior Erik Sawchuk (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) won 8-2 for Etown at number three doubles. The Etown men's tennis team will return to action at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 9 against Catawba College in Hilton Head. Also on Monday, the Etown women's tennis team, which had a perfect 14-0 season in the Fall of 2004, began non-traditional season play for the spring when it faced Penn State-Behrend Monday in Hilton Head as well.
