Etown Wins Second Consecutive Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College successfully defended its Middle Atlantic Conference men's indoor track & field crown at the 2004 MAC Indoor Championships at Susquehanna University Saturday, as the Blue Jays captured their second straight conference indoor title with 129 points. Etown first-year Mike Bauer (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) was named the MAC Rookie of the Year, and head coach Chris Straub was named the conference's Coach of the Year.

Bauer won the gold medal in the 55m dash in an Etown record-tying time of 6.61 seconds, and he captured a silver medal in the long jump with a program record distance of 23'3-1/2” that also meets the NCAA Division III Championship provisional qualifying standard. Bauer also took the bronze medal in the 200m with a time of 23.18 seconds.

In the triple jump, Etown sophomore Jason Patterson (Upper Marlboro, MD/Bowie) not only captured the gold medal, but he also shattered the Etown program record, MAC Championship record, and Susquehanna field house record in the event with a distance of 48'9”. Senior Pablo Callejas (Quito, Ecuador/Issac Newton) took the silver medal in the triple jump with a distance of 48'1-3/4”. Both he and Patterson exceeded the NCAA championship qualifying standard in the event.

Etown's distance medley relay team of Dave Bresnahan (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Dan Brosious (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity), Brent Landis (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) and Steve Sanko (Hazleton, PA/Bishop Hafey) won the gold medal in the event while shattering the MAC Championship and Susquehanna field house records with a time of 10:28.08.

The Etown 4x800m team of Greg Wetzel (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East), Patrick Donovan (South Pasadena, CA/St. Francis), Sean Mulcahy (Towanda, PA/Towanda) and Sanko also won the gold medal in an Etown program, MAC Championship, and Susquehanna field house record time of 8:02.11.

Mulcahy also took home a silver medal in the 800m in 1:59.65, and he captured a bronze medal in the 1500m in 4:00.06. Donovan took home a bronze medal in the 800m in 2:00.86. Dave Berdan (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) took bronze in the 5000m in 15:26.87, and Eric Bennett (Towanda, PA/Towanda) was a bronze medalist in the pole vault with a height of 14'0”, tying the Etown indoor record.

The 4x400m relay team of Darren DeAngelis (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge), Al Uliana (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl), Jason Patterson (Upper Marlboro, MD/Bowie) and Tom Raver (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) captured a silver medal for Etown in 3:31.53.

DeAngelis also took home a silver medal in the 55m hurdles in a program record time of 7.96 seconds, and Raver captured a bronze medal in the 400m in a program record time of 51.65 seconds.
