ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY
ETOWN, MILLERSVILLE REIGN SUPREME IN 'BATTLE FOR THE BUGGY' LANCASTER COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Soaked from the rain, mud-spattered and exhausted, 80 runners from Elizabethtown, Millersville, and Franklin and Marshall crossed the finish line at Elizabethtown College's cross country course Tuesday with one purpose in mind: to determine which school's teams are the fastest in Lancaster County. In the end, the victors of the first annual 'Battle for the Buggy' Lancaster County collegiate cross country championship were Elizabethtown's men and Millersville's women. The men's 5000 meter race began at 5:00 p.m. 16 minutes and 37 seconds later, Franklin and Marshall's Frank McCartney (Chalfont, PA/Germantown Academy) was the first to cross the finish line. He was also the only Diplomat to finish in the top 15. Jim Carney of Millersville finished second with a time of 16:53, and Elizabethtown's Larry Bullock (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) finished third in 16:56. Immediately following Bullock was Etown teammate Mike Zwatty (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land), and Millersville's Mark Stallings (Atglen/Great Valley) completed the top five. Elizabethtown's top five finishers all occupied the race's top ten, while Millersville had four runners finish in the top ten. The end result was that Elizabethtown defeated Millersville, 25-30, and Franklin and Marshall, 20-39, to win the inaugural men's Battle for the Buggy. Elizabethtown returns to action at the Frostburg State Invitational Saturday, October 2, 1999. Start time for the women's race is 11:00 a.m., and start time for the men is 11:45 a.m. Date: Tuesday, September 21, 1999
