ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Etown Runs at Lehigh Paul Short Invitational BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown men's cross country team made the best of its opportunity to run in the prestigious Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University Saturday, finishing 17th in a field of 39 primarily NCAA Division I and II teams while racing without one of its top runners. The Paul Short Run actually consists of three different races, an invitational race in which only Division I, II and the best Division III programs can participate, a Division III and open race, and a high school race. The event attracts schools from places as far-flung as California and Canada every year. Among the NCAA Division III teams running in the invitational race were some of the best: Haverford, ranked fifth in the nation, the College of New Jersey, ranked 15th in the nation, St. Lawrence, and Elizabethtown, ranked 24th in the nation. Elizabethtown finished behind these other three D-III schools; however, the Blue Jays raced only six of their top runners while the others sent seven. Etown's highest individual finisher was Dave Berdan (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley), who finished 23rd out of 274 runners and third among D-III participants in 25:25. Teammate Dustin Scott (Honey Brook, PA/Twin Valley) was right on his heels in 26th place with a time of 25:30. The third Blue Jay finisher was Mike Zwatty (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) in 110th place in 26:32. Fourth to cross the line for Etown was Steve Sanko (Hazleton, PA/Bishop Hafey) in 136th place with a time of 26:49. Josh Lyman (Parkside, PA/Sun Valley) finished in 157th place in 27:03 for Etown, and Kevin Roe (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) was the final Etown finisher with a time of 27:37 in 197th place. Missing from the Etown lineup was Matt Rockwell, who usually finishes as the Blue Jays' number three runner. Among the schools Elizabethtown's truncated lineup defeated were the University of Maryland, the University of Pittsburgh, Millersville, Lock Haven, Lehigh, Kutztown, Houston, Rider, La Salle, Lafayette, and West Chester, among others. Etown will return to action in the Gettysburg Invitational Saturday, October 20. At Bethlehem, Pa. Elizabethtown Individual Finishers: |
