Etown Wins Third Consecutive MAC Championship

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown men's cross country team won its third consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference championship Saturday at the MAC championship meet at Messiah. The Blue Jays finished with a team record low of 29 points and placed five runners in the top ten and seven in the top twenty.

The men's cross country program is now only the third program at Elizabethtown to win three consecutive conference championships; the men's soccer and baseball programs are the only other teams to have achieved the feat.

Junior Dave Berdan (Dingman's Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) won the MAC championship men's race for the first time in his collegiate career; he finished with a time of 26:11 over the 8K course. Teammate Dustin Scott (Honey Brook, PA/Twin Valley) placed second in 26:20. First-year Steve Sanko (Hazleton, PA/Bishop Hafey) was the third Blue Jay to cross the finish line, in seventh place in 27:10. Mike Zwatty (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) placed ninth in 27:21, and Josh Lyman (Parkside, PA/Sun Valley) finished tenth in 27:22. All five earned places on the All-MAC First Team by finishing in the top ten.

Earning All-MAC Second Team places by finishing in the top twenty were first years Jose Miranda (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) and Matt Rockwell (Plymouth, NH/Plymouth Regional), who placed 18th and 19th, respectively, with times of 27:57 and 28:05.
Leading the way for the Etown women was first-year Jill Brobst (Wilmington, DE/Condord) with a 23rd place finish out of 115 runners in 20:48 over the 5K course.

Elizabethtown will now prepare for the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional meet, to be held Saturday, November 10 at Lehigh University. If the Blue Jay men finish as one of the top two teams in the region there, Etown will advance as a team to the NCAA Division III national championship for the second time in three years.
