ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY Banner Day for Blue Jay Cross Country Teams: Etown Men Finish Second at Mideast Regional, Qualify as Team for National Championship Meet for Second Time in Three Years; Etown Women Finish 14th for Highest Regional Finish Since 1995 BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Saturday was a good day to be an Elizabethtown cross country fan. Running at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional meet, held at Lehigh University, the Blue Jay men finished second out of 31 teams to qualify as a team for the NCAA Division III national championship meet for the second time in three years. Meanwhile, the Etown women's team continued its rapid improvement this season, exceeding its goal of finishing 15th, instead finishing in 14th place out of 34 teams for its highest regional finish since 1995. In the men's race, Etown's second-place score was 78, the lowest score the Blue Jays have ever had at the Mideast Regional. Haverford finished first to clinch the region's other team berth in the Division III championships next Saturday. The Blue Jays had five runners make the All-Region Team by finishing in the top 35 out of 220 runners. Etown's highest finisher was Dustin Scott (Honey Brook, PA/Twin Valley), placing third with a 25:24 time over the 8K course. Etown's second finisher was 10th-place Dave Berdan (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) with a 26:01 time. Blue Jay sophomore Josh Lyman (Parkside, PA/Sun Valley), who was not even a member of Etown's top seven for last year's regional, finished 16th this year in 26:26 for his first-ever All-Region berth. Steve Sanko (Hazleton, PA/Bishop Hafey) made the All-Region team in his first year by finishing 21st in 26:35. Junior Mike Zwatty (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) earned his second career spot on the All-Region team by finishing 32nd in 26:50. Also competing for the Etown men was first-year Matt Rockwell (Plymouth, NH/Plymouth Regional), who placed 44th in 27:11, and first-year José Miranda (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township), who finished 62nd in 27:38 Scoring 490 points, the Blue Jay women finished 14th for their highest regional finish since 1995, when the team also placed 14th. First-year Jill Brobst (Wilmington, DE/Concord) paced Etown by finishing the 5K course in 20:01 to place 57th out of 235 runners. Also making the top 100 for the Blue Jays was first-year Brianon Shade (Washington, NJ/Washington Regional) in 92nd with a time of 20:41, and junior captain Maggie Martin (Berlin, NJ/Pope Paul VI) with a 94th-place showing in 20:43. The men's cross country team will return to action in the NCAA Division III national championship meet Saturday, November 17. The national championship is hosted this year by Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. At Bethlehem, Pa.
