ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Blue Jays Host Elizabethtown Invitational; Etown Wins Men's Race, Finishes Third in Women's; Matt Rockwell Top Men's Finisher LANCASTER, Pa. --- The Blue Jays hosted the Elizabethtown College Invitational Saturday at Lancaster County Central Park, and Etown made a strong showing in its 2002 homecoming. The Blue Jay men won their race and the Etown women's team finished third out of ten teams. For the Middle Atlantic Conference teams that ran at the meet, the Invitational afforded an opportunity to preview the course where the 2002 MAC Championships will be held Saturday, November 2. The Etown men, which ran their full lineup Saturday for the first time this season, placed first out of the nine teams that fielded enough runners to score. Etown totaled just 19 points. Blue Jay sophomore Matt Rockwell (Plymouth, NH/Plymouth Regional) was the first runner to cross the finish line, traversing the 8000m course in 27:59. The number two finisher was Etown's Steve Sanko (Hazleton, PA/Bishop Hafey), who logged a time of 28:12, and Etown's Josh Lyman (Parkside, PA/Sun Valley) finished third in 28:24. Blue Jay sophomore Jose Miranda (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) finished fifth overall in 28:26, and senior Dustin Scott (Honey Brook, PA/Twin Valley) finished eighth overall in his first race of the season in 28:38. It was also the first race of the season for Etown seniors Dave Berdan (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) and Mike Zwatty (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land), who finished 12th and 19th, respectively, in times of 28:50 and 29:29 All told, Elizabethtown placed nine runners in the top twenty of the 104-strong men's field, as freshman Greg Wetzel (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East) finished 17th in 29:10 and junior Sean Mulcahy (Towanda, PA/Towanda) placed 15th in 29:02. Also, Etown sophomore Chris Williams (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) just missed a top 20 finish, placing 23rd overall in 29:56. Elizabethtown will return to action Tuesday, October 1 as host of the fourth annual "Battle for the Buggy" against Millersville and Franklin & Marshall.
