Etown Wins 6th Consecutive MAC Championship to Tie College Record

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College men's cross country team from 1999 to 2004 has now officially taken its place as one of the two greatest dynasties in the history of the College. The Blue Jays won the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship for the sixth year in a row Saturday, totaling 33 points to place first out of 13 teams and beat second place host Widener University by 25 points. By extending its stranglehold on the conference to six years, the men's cross country team has tied the College's record for most consecutive conference titles set by the men's soccer team from 1962 to 1967.

Four Blue Jay runners – senior Steve Sanko (Hazleton, PA/Bishop Hafey), junior Greg Wetzel (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East), senior Jose Miranda (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) and senior Matt Rockwell (Plymouth, NH/Plymouth Regional) – earned First Team All-MAC honors by placing in the top ten out of 127 runners in the race. Sanko was Etown's top finisher in third overall with a time of 25:56 over the 8000m course, Wetzel placed fifth in 26:26, Miranda was sixth in 26:29, and Rockwell finished eighth in 26:50.

An additional five Etown runners – sophomore Patrick Donovan (South Pasadena, CA/St. Francis), sophomore Jason Theobald (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale), first-year Ryan Mulcahy (Towanda, PA/Towanda), senior Chris Williams (Dillsburg, PA/Northern York) and sophomore David Cohen (Allentown, PA/William Allen) – earned places on the All-MAC Second Team by finishing between 11th and 20th in the race. Donovan placed 11th in 26:56, Theobald was 13th in 27:03, Mulcahy placed 14th in 27:04, Williams placed 15th in 27:08 to earn All-MAC honors for the first time in his career, and Cohen placed 17th in 27:13.

The total of nine Etown runners to earn all-conference honors this year is the most in program history. The team's previous record was eight in 2002.

Elizabethtown will return to action at the Mideast Regional Championships Saturday, November 13 at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. There, the Blue Jays will try to qualify as a team to compete at the November 20 NCAA Division III Championships.
