Etown Edges Widener by One Point for College-Record Seventh Consecutive Conference Title at MAC Championships

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- By a margin of a single point, Elizabethtown College’s men’s cross country team won its seventh consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference title Saturday at the 2005 MAC Championships, hosted by Juniata College. Etown won with a score of 40, edging out nationally 22nd-ranked Widener University, which placed second with 41 points.

By winning their seventh MAC title in a row, the Blue Jays broke a College record that had stood since 1967. The most consecutive titles in Etown history used to be six, set between 1962 and 1967 by the men’s soccer team.

Seven Etown runners earned All-MAC honors by finishing in the top 20 in the 134-finisher field, and four of them made the All-MAC First Team by placing in the top 10. Etown’s top finisher on the day was Tyson Evensen (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park), who placed second overall on the 8k course in 26:02 and was named the Blue Jays’ team MVP. Jason Theobald (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) placed sixth as Etown’s number two runner in 26:51, and David Cohen (Allentown, PA/William Allen) finished eighth in 26:56. Also earning All-MAC First Team honors was senior Greg Wetzel (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East), who placed ninth in 26:57.

Earning All-MAC Second Team honors for Etown were Patrick Donovan (South Pasadena, CA/St. Francis) in 15th place in 27:12, first-year student Brandon Bear (York, PA/Eastern York) in 17th place in 27:14, who as the race’s highest finishing first-year student also earned MAC Rookie of the Year status, and Ryan Mulcahy (Towanda, PA/Towanda) who placed 20th in 27:21.

Etown will return to action Saturday, November 12 in the Mideast Regional Championships, which will be hosted by Dickinson College and held at Carlisle ( Pa.) High School.
