Elizabethtown Sophomores Emily Morris and Michelle Morris Named Commonwealth Conference Softball First Team All-Stars

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Two members of the Elizabethtown College softball team have been named Commonwealth Conference first team all-stars for the 2002 season. They are sophomore shortstop Emily Morris (Canton, PA/Canton) and sophomore pitcher Michelle Morris (Conyngham, PA/Hazleton).

This season is Emily Morris' second time as a member of the Commonwealth Conference all-star teams, and her first time as a member of the first team. She was named to the second team as a freshman in 2001. Emily Morris led Elizabethtown with a .406 batting average in 2002, and she set new program records for most hits (54) and most at bats (133) in a season. Her 13 doubles this year rank in a tie for second place in a single season all-time at Etown, and she also belted out three triples and one home run for a .571 slugging percentage. She also led the team with 28 runs scored, and she drove in 19 runs.

Through two seasons, Emily Morris is a career .347 hitter. She has two varsity letters in volleyball as well as in softball, and she has made the conference all-star team once in volleyball.

Michelle Morris was named to the conference all-star team for the first time this year, following a season where she became one of the most dominant pitchers in Etown history. She became the Blue Jay's first 20-game winner ever, compiling a 20-4 mark in 2002 with a 1.39 ERA and one save. In a program record 171-1/3 innings pitched, she shattered the old Etown record of 113 strikeouts in a season by whiffing 177 batters while walking just 21. Through May 5, she ranked 24th in the country with 7.4 strikeouts per seven innings. She also set program records for most shutouts (7) and appearances (28). She held opposing hitters to a .212 average in 2002.

Through two seasons, Michelle Morris has a 23-7 record with a 1.51 ERA, and 195 career strikeouts in 199-2/3 innings pitched.

The Elizabethtown College softball team had a record-breaking year in 2002, finishing 30-12 overall, shattering the old program record of 25 wins in a season set 15 years ago. The team went 10-4 in the Commonwealth Conference and finished in second place, making the playoffs for the first time since 1994. The Blue Jays also set a new program record with a 15 game winning streak in the middle of the season.
