FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown Junior Steve Luongo Named Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Week ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College junior Steve Luongo (Palm Coast, FL--Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge, NJ) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 11. It is the first time in his career he has received the honor. Luongo, who also plays left field and first base for the Elizabethtown baseball team, started and completed one shutout game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on the road at Moravian Friday. In that game, an 8-0 Etown win, he pitched all seven innings, striking out 11 batters while walking just two and allowing only four base hits. On the mound thus far this season, Luongo is 3-0 with a 1.90 ERA in five appearances and four starts. He has pitched two complete games and one shutout in 23-2/3 innings of work, allowing just 19 hits and eight walks in the process while striking out 26. Opposing batters have a .216 average against him. At the plate this year, Luongo is batting .284 with 15 runs scored, nine RBI, four doubles, one triple and one home run in 81 at-bats. Luongo is a career .343 hitter at the plate in 99 games played, and in his rookie season of 2002, he set a program record for most doubles in a season with 21. As a pitcher, he has a collegiate career record of 5-4 with three saves in 25 appearances. The Elizabethtown College baseball team is currently 10-13 overall and 5-6 in the Commonwealth Conference. The Blue Jays' non-conference game at home against Rowan University that was scheduled for Tuesday, April 13 has been postponed to April 28 due to rain. Etown's next scheduled game will be held at home Wednesday, April 14 against Franklin & Marshall College in a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game. |
