Elizabethtown College Senior Sean Mulcahy Named MAC Spring Male Scholar-Athlete

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior Sean Mulcahy (Towanda, PA/Towanda), a member of the Etown men's track & field and men's cross country teams, has been named the male Scholar-Athlete for the 2004 Spring season by the Middle Atlantic Conferences. Only one senior male and one senior female student are selected as Scholar-Athletes each season by the MAC from among the MAC's sixteen member schools.

Mulcahy is the second Elizabethtown student ever to earn the MAC Scholar-Athlete award since it was established in the Fall of 2000, and he is the first male student from Elizabethtown College ever to win the award.

Mulcahy, who has served as the captain of both the men's track & field and men's cross country teams and is an accounting major at Elizabethtown, has been on the Dean's List six times at Etown and has been a member of the MAC All-Academic team every season since his sophomore year began. He is a member of Elizabethtown's chapter of Delta Mu, a national business honor society, as well as a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, a national honor society for first-year students. In the summer of 2003, he was named a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District II Second Team.

In track & field, Mulcahy holds the Etown record in the outdoor 1500m (3:56.86) and he shares program relay records in the indoor 4x800m (8:02.11), indoor distance medley (10:23.78), outdoor 4x800m (7:56.28), outdoor 4x1500m (16:04.66) and outdoor distance medley (10:25.67). He totaled eight MAC Indoor & Outdoor Championship medals, including two gold medals, over the course of his career.

In cross country, Mulcahy was a three-time All-MAC harrier, earning spots on the second team by finishing in the top 20 at the MAC Championship meet in 2000 and 2003 and earning a spot on the first team by finishing in the top 10 in 2002. He was also an All-Mideast Region cross country runner in 2003 by finishing 23rd at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championship meet.

The Elizabethtown College men's track & field team won its first-ever MAC Outdoor Championship in 2004, and the Blue Jays won back-to-back MAC Indoor titles in 2003 and 2004. The Etown men's cross country program has won five consecutive MAC titles from 1999 to 2003. In the 2003-04 academic year, the Etown men's cross country and track & field programs completed their first ever “Triple Crown” -- sweeping the MAC Championships in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field.

The outdoor track & field season will continue for Elizabethtown at the James Madison University Invitational Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9, as well as at the NCAA Division III Championships for individual qualifiers at the end of May.
