ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Seven members of the 2003 Elizabethtown College men's soccer team have earned spots on the All-Commonwealth Conference teams. Six of them, including sophomore forward Brian Healy (Newark, DE/A.I. DuPont), senior forward Steve Custer (Baltimore, MD/Dundalk), senior midfielder Charlie Haines (Hamilton, NJ/Hun School of Princeton), sophomore midfielder Andrew Kummerer (Glenmoore, PA/Coatesville), senior defender Ryan Wattenschaidt (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) and senior goalkeeper Michael Ciattei (Jarrettsville, MD/St. Paul's School-Baltimore), have been named to the first team. Senior defender Casey Moore (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) was the lone Blue Jay named to the conference's second team. Also, first-year midfielder Brennan Reichenbach (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove Area) has been named the conference's Co-Rookie of the Year.
Healy earned a spot on the All-Commonwealth teams for the first time in his career this year. He is currently tied for the team lead in goals with eight, and he is second on the team in assists with eight and points with 24. He was named the conference's Player of the Week twice this year. As a first-year in 2002, Healy totaled two goals and three assists for seven points.
2003 marks Custer's second year on the All-Commonwealth Conference first team, having also been named to the first team in 2001. He was also an all-conference second team member in 2002. He is currently third on the team in goals and points with six and 20, respectively, and he is second on the team in assists with eight. Thus far in his career, Custer has compiled 22 goals and 22 assists for 66 career points.
This is the third year in a row Haines has made the all-conference first team. In 2003, he currently has five goals and seven assists for 17 points. Over the course of his career, the two-time All-Mid-Atlantic Region honoree has compiled 20 goals and 20 assists for 60 career points. A rare two-sport star in collegiate athletics, Haines was also a first team all-conference golfer for the first time in the spring of 2003.
In just two collegiate seasons, Kummerer has now been named to the All-Commonwealth first team twice. This year, as a midfielder, he has one goal and six assists for eight points. As a forward last year, he led the team with 17 points. Thus far in his career, he has seven goals and 11 assists for 25 points.
A 2001 all-conference second team forward, Wattenschaidt was switched to the backfield prior to the start of this season to help plug a huge gap in Etown's defense left by a graduated All-American and an all-conference player who transferred, and he responded by becoming one of the key parts of a Blue Jay defense that has allowed just ten goals in 18 games thus far this year. This is the first time he has made the All-Commonwealth first team. He has one goal and three assists for five points in 2003, and in his career he has 11 goals and 10 assists for 32 points.
This is the second year in a row Ciattei has been named to the All-Commonwealth Conference first team. He has ranked among the top goaltenders in the nation in goals against average this season. He currently has a goals against average of 0.48 and a save percentage of .870 in 1,316 minutes of playing time in 2003, with a win-loss record of 14-1-1. His career record in the net is 30-6-4.
Moore has been named an All-Commonwealth Conference player for the first time in his career this year. He is one of the mainstays of Etown's defense, which, in addition to allowing just ten goals thus far, has averaged allowing just 7.6 shots per game as well. Thus far this year, he has three goals and two assists for eight points. In his four year career, he has four goals and eight assists for 16 points. Another two-sport athlete at Etown, he has also twice been named the conference's most outstanding men's swimmer, and he is an All-American in swimming as well.
Reichenbach has made a major impact on Etown's midfield in the 15 games he has played as a first-year in 2003. He was also named the conference's Player of the Week once this season. Thus far this year, he has two goals for four points, and he has made five starts for the Blue Jays.
The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team is currently 15-2-1 overall and ranked 16th in the nation in NCAA Division III and third in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Blue Jays will host Moravian Wednesday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the first round of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs. Etown is the number two seed in this year's conference tournament, the winner of which receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
