FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown College First-Year Emma Smith Named Commonwealth Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College first-year student Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in women's tennis for the week ending September 5. Smith proved she had no trouble adjusting to the college game last week as she made her NCAA debut. She won a 6-3, 6-3 match at number three singles against Scranton in Etown's season opener September 1, and she won 8-5 at number three doubles as well against the Royals while pairing with Etown sophomore Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett). Playing number two singles against conference rival Widener September 4, Smith won 6-0, 6-0, and she won 8-0 at number three doubles with Lander for a pair of whitewashes on the day. Facing Franklin & Marshall September 5, a team that Etown had not beaten since 1984 and to which the Blue Jays had lost 14 consecutive meetings, Smith helped Etown to its first win over F&M in 20 years. In singles, she bounced back from a rough second set to win 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 at number three, and at number three doubles she and Lander won 8-6 as the Blue Jays won the match 5-4. For her first week as a collegiate player, Smith went 3-0 in singles, 3-0 in doubles, and 6-0 overall. The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team is currently 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Conference, and the Blue Jays will face their next match Saturday, September 11 on the road against Albright College at 1:00 p.m. |
