FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown College Sophomore Stacy Shapiro Named Commonwealth Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College sophomore Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week in women's tennis for the week ending October 3. It is the first time in her career that the 2003 conference Rookie of the Year has earned Player of the Week honors. Shapiro put together a string of never-say-die performances at number one singles and number one doubles last week as Etown went 2-0 and clinched first place in the regular season Commonwealth Conference standings. Facing Susquehanna, she pulled out a 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), (10-5) win at number one singles and an 8-6 win at number one doubles as the Blue Jays won 9-0. In Etowns 6-3 win over Moravian, the Blue Jays first win over the Greyhounds since 1995, Shapiro and Kristy Trimbey (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) found themselves down 7-4 at number one doubles and rallied to win 9-7. At number one singles against Moravian, Shapiro won a 4-6, 7-5, (13-11) comeback match. Thus far this season, Shapiro is 10-2 in singles matches and 7-5 in doubles play for a combined record of 17-5. Over the course of her career, she has gone 16-9 in singles and 12-13 in doubles for a 28-22 overall record. The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team is currently 11-0 overall, its best record through 11 matches ever, and has a 7-0 record in the Commonwealth Conference. Etown faces Goucher College in a non-conference match on the road today at 3:30 p.m. On Wednesday, October 6, the Blue Jays will host number four seed Lebanon Valley College in the opening round of the Commonwealth Conference team playoffs at 3:00 p.m. at Elizabethtown's Alumni Courts. Etown is the number one seed in the conference team playoffs. |
