Elizabethtown College to Induct Five Alumni into Ira R. Herr Athletics Hall of Fame

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College will induct five new members into its Ira R. Herr Athletics Hall of Fame over Homecoming weekend, October 16 and 17. They are Karen A. Barclay '90, a member of the softball and women's basketball teams, Gregory K. Millen '88, a member of the golf team, Shannon W. Perry '87, a member of the men's soccer team, George C. Stauffer '77, a member of the wrestling team, and Edith M. Thompson '83, a member of the field hockey team.

The five will be honored at halftime during the 4:30 p.m. men's soccer game against York College Saturday, October 16, and they will be formally inducted in a luncheon ceremony Sunday, October 17.

Barclay, who hails from and currently resides in Loysville, PA, was one of the greatest hitters in the history of the Etown softball program. Her career batting average of .372 ranks third all-time at Etown to this day, as does her career triple total of 12. She also ranks sixth all-time at Etown in career home runs with seven. She was a two-time All-Middle Atlantic Conference Northwest League catcher in 1988 and 1990 who batted .434 with four home runs, 28 runs scored and 16 RBIs in 1990. Of the one NCAA Division III tournament appearance made and two conference championships won in the history of the Etown softball program, Barclay was an integral part of the team for all of them. As a basketball player, Barclay was a member of Elizabethtown's 1988-89 NCAA Division III national champion team.

Millen, who resides in Lancaster, PA, had just one year in which to compete, as Elizabethtown College only reinstated golf as a varsity sport his senior year. Millen walked on to the fledgling team and immediately established himself as one of the most dominant individual athletes in Etown history. He won the 15-team Dickinson College tournament in 1988 and placed second at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships. From there, he became the first, and so far only, Elizabethtown golfer to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships. He finished 25th out of 120 golfers at the national championships and won the Division III “Longest Drive Contest.” His average score per 18-hole round of 77.8 stood as the single-season Elizabethtown College record for 16 years until it was broken in 2004.

Perry, who resides in Silver Spring, MD and hails from Rockville, MD, was Elizabethtown's first men's soccer player to earn All-America honors in back-to-back seasons in 22 years when he captured the honor for the second year in a row in 1985. To this day, he ranks seventh all-time at Etown in career assists with 33, an all the more remarkable feat considering he only played for Etown for three seasons. He was a three-time All-Middle Atlantic Conference midfielder in 1984, 1985 and 1986, and he was the MAC Northern Division Most Valuable Player in 1985 and 1986. During his three years in a Blue Jay uniform, the team advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament three times and won the 1986 MAC Championship. The team went 45-14-8 during those three years.

Stauffer, who resides in Reading, PA and hails from Hummelstown, PA, was a two time Middle Atlantic Conference champion at 177 lbs. in 1972 and in 1975. He was just the second Blue Jay wrestler to earn a MAC individual title twice, a feat which to this day only ten wrestlers have accomplished. In addition to winning the MAC title at 177 lbs. as a freshman, he also set College records at the time for most falls with eight and for most consecutive falls with four. At the MAC Championships in 1972, he defeated three wrestlers after receiving a first round bye and won the conference title by a 6-5 score against a wrestler from Wilkes University, the MAC team champion that year. At the MAC Championships in 1975, he beat two opponents he had lost to during the regular season to reclaim his MAC title. Stauffer was 12-4-1 in dual match competition in 1974-75, and he went 10-2-1 in dual matches in 1975-76.

Thompson, who resides in Newark, DE and hails from Boyertown, PA, was a defender who became Elizabethtown's first-ever NCAA Division III All-American in field hockey, as well as the field hockey program's first All-American in 20 years, in her senior season of 1982. From 1979 to 1982, she tallied 23 assists from the both the midfield and the backfield, ranking her sixth all-time at Etown. Her nine assists in 1982 is also the sixth-highest single season total in Etown history. She also scored ten goals in her career. During her time at Etown, the field hockey team advanced to the AIAW national tournament twice and the NCAA Division III tournament twice, and was an AIAW national semifinalist in 1980 and an NCAA Division III national semifinalist in 1981. The team compiled a 45-21-5 record during that span.
