FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elizabethtown College Senior Mel Parenteau Named Commonwealth Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior co-captain Mel Parenteau (Marydel, MD/North Caroline) has been named the Commonwealth Conference's Player of the Week for the week ending October 10 in women's tennis. It is the third time this season that a Blue Jay player has won the award, and it is the second time in Parenteau's career that she has received the Player of the Week honor, having earned it once in 2003 as well. Parenteau was the only Blue Jay to go 4-0 last week as Elizabethtown won its first conference title since 1995. In Etowns 9-0 Commonwealth semifinal win over Lebanon Valley Wednesday, she won 4-6, 6-2, (10-3) at number three singles and 8-4 at number two doubles. In Saturdays 5-4 conference championship win over Moravian, Parenteau, together with Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown), formed the only Etown doubles team to win that day, as they won at number two by an 8-6 score. Parenteaus number three singles match was the final match of the day to finish, and as she won 7-5, 6-3 over a player to whom she had lost the previous week, Etown clinched the match victory. Her singles win Saturday was the 37th of Parenteaus career, placing her one win shy of the Etown modern record for most singles victories in a career. Thus far this season, Parenteau is 12-4 in singles matches and 12-3 in doubles matches for a 24-7 overall record. Over the course of her career, she has gone 37-15 in singles matches and a 36-21 mark in doubles matches for a 73-36 overall record. The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team is currently 13-0 overall, having most recently won the Commonwealth Conference championship, its first conference title since 1995 and its third ever, with a 5-4 win over Moravian College Saturday. The Blue Jays, whose 13-0 record is their best ever, will play their final dual match of the Fall 2004 season at home Thursday, October 14 in a non-conference contest against Immaculata College at 3:30 p.m. After that, the Blue Jays will play in their final event of the Fall when they compete as individuals at the Middle Atlantic Conferences' singles and doubles championships, held at Lehigh University and hosted jointly by Moravian College and DeSales University, Saturday and Sunday, October 16 and 17. |
