Elizabethtown College Senior Kim Whalen Named the MASCAC Scholar-Athlete for Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College senior middle-distance runner Kim Whalen (Wilmington, DE/Ursuline Academy) has been named the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Scholar-Athlete for women’s outdoor track & field in the 2005-06 academic year. The MASCAC comprises the 16 colleges and universities that are members of the Middle Atlantic Conference, the Commonwealth Conference and/or the Freedom Conference. One Scholar-Athlete, who must be a senior with a minimum grade-point average of 3.2 to be considered for the award, is selected by the MASCAC for each sport per year on the basis of academic and athletic accomplishments.

Whalen, one of the captains of the Elizabethtown women’s track & field team ever since her junior year, helped lead the Blue Jays to their first-ever Middle Atlantic Conference team title at the 2006 MAC Indoor Championships. She is a College record holder in the outdoor 4x800m relay (9:58.54) and in the indoor 4x800m relay (10:04.70). She has also been a four-year member of Elizabethtown’s women’s cross country team, which won its first-ever MAC title in the fall of 2004.

A standout relay competitor, Whalen has been a Middle Atlantic Conference champion five times in her collegiate career, most recently in both the 4x800m relay and the distance medley relay at the 2006 MAC Indoor Championships. She also won MAC titles in the indoor 4x400m relay in 2005, the indoor 4x800m relay in 2004, and in the indoor distance medley relay in 2003. She was also an MAC bronze medalist in the indoor 4x800m relay in 2005, and she earned All-MAC Second Team honors with a fourth place finish in the indoor 4x200m relay in 2005 and a fourth place finish in the indoor 4x800m relay in 2003.

Academically, Whalen has been a member of the MASCAC All-Academic Team every fall, winter and spring season since her sophomore year. She is an Elizabethtown College Presidential Scholar, and she has earned a place on the College’s Dean’s List every semester of her collegiate career. She also is a member of Delta Mu Delta, a national honor society for business administration. She is majoring in business marketing and in finance at Elizabethtown College with a minor in history.

The Elizabethtown College women’s track & field team finished first out of ten teams with a score of 130 points at the 2006 MAC Indoor Championships in February to win its first conference title in the program’s seventh year of varsity competition. The Blue Jays’ outdoor season began March 24, and the 2006 MAC Outdoor Championships will be held May 4-6 at Widener University. The NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships will be held May 25-27.
